An exclusive property set high on a rocky outcrop of the Gabbro Hills in the heart of one of South Africa’s largest game reserves, where guests can find the Super 7 – buffalo, elephant, lion, leopard, cheetah, rhino and wild dog!
Accommodation is in five ultra-luxurious thatched suites – each of which has fine mahogany furniture, open fireplaces, indoor and outdoor showers, large sun deck and a private plunge pool which overlooks a waterhole. The main areas of the lodge house one of the world’s finest African art collections, from oils to bronzes, abstract to portraits.
World class safari plus world class art equals Mateya, a luxury hideaway. The owner’s vast and private African art collection fills the walls and spaces of the lodge, and almost draws the eye away from the wildlife, gym and spa on offer!
Mateya offers some extraordinary dining experiences. Each night your specially prepared meal will be enjoyed in a different location. You can opt for group or couple dining depending on how much you want to get to know your fellow safari explorers. But we like the idea that there’s somewhere different to eat each night, you can be under the stars, out in the bush, under canvas or on your own deck.
With only five rooms you are very much hosting a private party of your own. Each lodge is beautifully decorated with the idea of blending into the natural surroundings. Mahogany furniture seamlessly blends in, while luxury bathrooms will keep you soaking your toes for longer than anticipated. Only ten people can be accommodated at any one time at Mateya, making it so private you slip away into your own plunge pool on your private deck and look out uninterrupted across the plains and watering holes.
As game drives are the main activity Mateya is not seen as a kids destination. There is also no kids club, and with such a small number of residences it’s not somewhere where we would suggest going with a family.
