Loved by visitors for its astounding location and great value for money, Gondwana is a unique private game reserve – it is the only fynbos reserve in the world that is also home to the Big Five, as well as endangered species such as the black harrier and the Cape mountain zebra. Set on 11,000 hectares of rolling hills, with endless mountain views this is the perfect place for nature enthusiasts and families alike – they have a very popular junior ranger programme. The range of safaris on offer includes horse safaris and bush walks, giving you great opportunities to get up close to some of the most fascinating animals in the world on a daily basis. The safaris are lead by highly knowledgeable expert rangers, who provide fascinating and informative facts and stories throughout the duration of the trip.
Other activities available include mountain biking and hiking, or those looking for a more laid back, relaxing holiday can experience an Africology spa treatment.
The Gondwana Private Game Reserve has excellent facilities, all of the comfortable safari rooms and private villas boast stunning views of the surrounding area. The dining facilities cater to all visitor’s needs, providing beautiful barbecues in the evening, as well as a children’s menu to accommodate families. A full English breakfast buffet is also provided on mornings.
Many exciting tourist attractions also sit close to the Gondwana. Numerous fantastic beaches are nearby, each of which offers a great range of activities as well as terrific swimming and surfing conditions. A number of picturesque costal towns are also nearby, including Mossel Bay, Knysna and Plettenberg Bay.
The Gondwana’s name comes from the name given to the more southerly of the two supercontinents from approximately 180 to 510 million years ago: Gondwanaland. The site was also the first free-roaming Big Five Reserve to open in the Western Cape.
A unique game reserve, that also focuses on the diverse fynbos of South Africa, Gondwana has something to offer everyone. Less than a four hour drive from Cape Town, it is the ideal addition to a city getaway or the perfect starting point on a tour of the Garden Route.
The delicious homely cuisine is served in a variety of locations around the reserve, indoors and out. Food and wine parings are offered each evening.
The Kwena Restaurant, Bar and Lounge is open to guests of Kwena Lodge and the Fynbos villas, while guests in the Private Bush Villas have their own private dining area – Lehele Restaurant, Bar and Lounge.
Kwena Lodge – there are 14 of these rondavel-style rooms, nestled on a ridge surrounded by fynbos with 180 degree views out onto the reserve. Each has a skylight for stargazing, sumptuous four poster beds and luxurious bathrooms.
Fynbos Villas – there are 6 three bed Fynbos Villas, and 1 one bed on offer. These rooms are ideal for families, and offer a larger living space than the rooms in Kwena Lodge.
Private Bush Villas – these are perfect for larger families, or a group of friends travelling together. There are 3 three bed villas and 1 four bed villa on offer. All bedrooms are en-suite, and guests of the private villas have access to their own restaurant, bar and lounge – Lehele Restaurant.
Children of all ages are welcome; however the Junior Ranger Programme is for children aged 6-12 years old. Fynbos Villas and the Private Bush Villas are the ideal accommodation option for families. There are children’s menus available at lunch and dinner.
The Junior Ranger Programme includes a fun rangers backpack with a safari booklet containing the check lists for the activities they'll enjoy during their stay. Activities include learning how to identify animals, birds, plants and even the stars. At night, the children's turn down includes a bed time story and tasty snack.
For children under the age of 6 a baby sitting service is available on request at an extra charge.
