What are the big 5 in Africa? Where should I go to see them? When, and for how long? These are the commonest things we are asked, but of course the answers depend on a multitude of variants. In order to answer some of these questions, we have put together a very brief guide to the best places to go to in Africa to see each of the Big Five.
Lion
King of the Jungle, the lion is the poster boy of the bush, and nowhere does them better than Kenya’s Masai Mara, one of the finest safari destinations in Africa. The grasslands and wooded areas are perfect lion territory, with a property such as Cottar’s 1920s Camp the perfect base from which to view them.

Buffalo
Perhaps not at the top of many safari-goers wish lists, the much maligned buffalo is nevertheless still one of Africa’s big five and is found in enormous numbers in Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park, where they mass each year and form the bulk of the iconic Great Migration. Head to Singita Sasakwa for some serious sightings.

Leopard
As elusive as any, the leopard is arguably Africa’s hardest member of the big five to see. A majestic sighting whenever it is spotted, staying in the South Luangwa National Park in Zambia at the iconic Nkwali Lodge will provide you with some of your best chances of seeing these sleek creatures up close.

Elephant
Many people’s favourites, the big old elephant is thankfully still found in large swathes right across East & Southern Africa, with numbers in the Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe only topped by Botswana’s Chobe National Park – where a stay at the Muchenje Safari Lodge will put you in the heart of elephant territory.

Rhino
Last on the list is the prehistoric-looking and sadly endangered rhino. Conservation efforts have increased rapidly over the years to help protect this majestic giant, with nowhere doing it better than South Africa’s Kruger National Park, and the aptly-named Rhino Post Safari Lodge.

Aside from the Big Five, you also have hippos, giraffes, gorillas, cheetahs, wild dogs, chimpanzees, zebras and much, much more, so do get in contact with us and let us help you plan your perfect wildlife adventure.
