The atmospheric village of Franschhoek has always been one of my favourite spots in the Cape’s wine region so I was very excited when I recently had a pit-stop there to stay overnight in the Last Word’s charming property.
The Last Word Franschhoek, to give it its correct title, enjoys a really superb location in the very heart of this picturesque village, just a short stroll along the main street to numerous restaurants, cafés, boutiques & art galleries.
A stop for the popular Franschhoek Wine Tram is also less than 10 minutes walk away, which allowed me to visit a number of local wine estates without the worry of having to self-drive, or hunt for taxis.
Franschhoek was the scene of some catastrophic floods in 2023, which resulted in the property having to close for some serious refurbishment, but I am pleased to report that the re-build was sensitively handled, and the guest rooms are still beautifully furnished and spacious, and offer an elegant space away from the hustle and bustle of this ever-popular village.
The hotel boasts a small pool area, (which provided a welcome relief from the heat which was building in the Franschhoek Valley), as well as an inviting lounge area with honesty bar. The breakfast remains one of the area’s tastiest, with guests encouraged to have lunch and dinner out in the village, which is known to many as South Africa’s gourmet capital. As the hotel only has 10 rooms, the staff-to-guest ratio is high, which is reflected in the wonderfully-attentive service offered – the staff are super-knowledgeable about where to eat and drink, and are happy to make reservations wherever needed. Cocktails and complimentary pre-dinner canapes with the other guests was one of the many highlights of my stay at the Last Word.
I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at the Last Word and, in an area where the car is sometimes king, it was a real treat to stay somewhere where I could just leave my car keys in my pocket and set off on foot to explore.
