Situated on what was for almost 30 years a dry grassy plain in the southern part of the Linyanti Concession, Savuti Camp now finds itself on the banks of the now-flowing Savuti Channel. Always an area of great wildlife sightings, the presence of permanent water has transformed the area of Savuti, also spelled Savute, into possibly one of the best game viewing destinations in Southern Africa. Expect large numbers of elephant plus many species of antelope and classic African animals such as giraffe, buffalo and warthog. There's a summer season zebra migration that passes through the area and the bird watching is fantastic but the ace up the sleeve is the abundance of predators - lion, spotted hyena, cheetah, leopard, wild dog and jackal are all commonly sighted. Activities at Savuti Camp include game drives in open 4x4 vehicles, close-up game viewing from hides, night drives and walks with an armed guide.
A property which has really benefitted in recent times from the re-opening of the Savuti Channel, lying as it does overlooking it. The large viewing area at the camp boasts a very high success rate for hippo-spotters, and for those wanting to just relax rather than go on a game drive, there are two game-viewing hides – the perfect spot to sit and watch with a G&T in hand.
The camp’s main area is raised high on wooden stilts overlooking the channel and passing animals. The thatched dining area, bar and comfortable lounge area spills out onto a large, shady wooden deck with a small swimming pool. There is also a curio shop for gifts for those at home. Congregate around the campfire at night for a couple of drinks and the chance to swap stories of the day's best wildlife sightings.
Start the day with a selection of cereals, fruit and muffins before your morning safari activity and return mid-morning to a generous brunch buffet served in the dining area. Enjoy a sweet and savoury afternoon tea before your late afternoon game drive and return after sunset for a delicious three-course dinner enjoyed with the other guests in the raised dining area or on the wooden deck at the water’s edge.
Each of the seven luxury en suite chalets at Savuti Camp has been built on a raised wooden deck and features canvas walls and a high thatch roof. All rooms face the river and open onto a spacious wooden deck from which to watch both the river and wildlife pass by. They also offer a Family Tent which is a large double tent with a master bedroom and an adjoining bedroom with two single beds. Both open onto the large wooden deck overlooking the Savuti Channel. Enquire about spending a night out in the wilderness: a bed can be made up and dinner served in one of the hides for a spellbinding experience.
