In western Tanzania on the shore of Lake Tanganyika lies a unique camp, Greystoke Mahale. With a backdrop of the forested slopes of the Mahale mountains and looking out over one of the world's largest freshwater lakes, the camp nestles comfortably in its natural surroundings. With no roads for many miles around adventurous visitors arrive by light aircraft and a 90 minute trip up the lake by dhow.
The camp has just six thatched chalets set in trees with views over the beach and lake. These open fronted bandas have been constructed from old dhows and have an upper deck which is perfect for lazing away an afternoon. For those looking for a more active stay there is a range of activities on the lake and in the forest including kayaking, fishing and forest walks to enjoy the great bird and animal life and swim in pools beneath waterfalls, but the main attraction are the chimpanzees that live in the mountains.
A truly unique lodge in a remote, magical setting that rewards the adventurous traveller. The journey is certainly worth the effort as a mix of activity and relaxation in a beautiful, remote setting await. Spending time with the chimpanzees is an experience that will live with you forever. To trek through the forest and then spend time observing these fascinating primates in their natural surroundings is a privilege.
Meals are served in the main thatched mess area on the beach and sundowners in the bar on the rocks of the headland.
Greystoke Mahale has six open-fronted thatched chalets or bandas, set in the treeline at the base of the Mahale mountains looking out over the beach and Lake Tanganyika. Each chalet is unique and has been made using wood recycled from dhow sailing boats with a ladder to an upper deck on which to relax.
Children aged 8 and over are welcome. Note that children under the age of 12 are not allowed to go chimp trekking.
