Set in a private reserve with direct access to the Namib Naukluft National Park and the famous red dunes of Sossusvlei, Little Kulala is located at the heart of Namibia's Namib Desert. The lodge is stylishly designed using neutral colours and organic material so that it blends into the landscape and is cleverly positioned to maximise your views of the dunes. The lodge's spacious villas offer privacy and seclusion but you'll want to do some exploring first: set off by 4X4 in the early morning for a drive through the desert and into the Namib Naukluft National Park for Sossusvlei's magnificent, towering sand dunes. Guided nature drives and walks on the private reserve provide a unique understanding of your spectacular surroundings, and for a truly unforgettable experience, rise early for an optional dawn ride over the Namib in a hot air balloon.
Beautifully run by Wilderness Safaris, guests really must spend a night under the stars on the specially-designed rooftop skybeds – an unbelievable experience matched by few other places in Africa. Taking an outdoor shower under the blasting African sunshine should also be on the tick list here.
Using thatch, wood and glass, the lodge blends both effortlessly and stylishly into the desert environment. The lounge and bar area flows onto a spacious wooden deck that doubles as an alfresco dining room with endless views over the desert. The deck extends towards the refreshing swimming pool that also boasts magnificent views. Select a book from the lodge library and spend a lazy afternoon around the pool or browse through the African crafts and artefacts that can be bought at the lodge's boutique shop.
Meals are usually served at individual tables on the extensive deck from which guests can enjoy beautiful views although on chilly evenings meals are served in front of the large fireplace. Excellent wine from the lodge's underground wine cellar complements each meal. Don’t miss out on a picnic brunch surrounded by the red Soussusvlei dunes, and a romantic dinner for two can be arranged in the lodge's atmospheric cosy cellar.
The camp comprises 11 luxury suites or 'kulalas', including a two-bedroom family unit, all beautifully designed using neutral colours, organic shapes and enormous glass windows to maximise the views. Each unit is designed for comfort and is fully equipped with an en suite bathroom including an outdoor shower and a private plunge pool. All suites provide excellent views from their decks and the rooftop area is perfect for relaxing, star gazing and dining. For an unforgettable night in the desert, you can choose to sleep out either on your rooftop or downstairs on the deck.
