Situated in the Garden Route's treasure trove of pristine beaches, lush indigenous forests and tranquil estuaries, this manor estate on the west shore of Knysna Lagoon is one of South Africa's most romantic and most relaxed getaways.
Guests are accommodated in 28 individual cottages situated in 10 hectares of gardens. Offering single or double storey options, the cottages have either lagoon or garden views. Each cottage has a wide veranda or "stoep", a comfortable living room, a fully equipped kitchen and one or two double en-suite bedrooms. In addition some have a third bedroom, a dining-room or a study.
The property is renowned for its gardens, which are home to 270 different species of bird, its food, all sourced from local suppliers, and its location, overlooking the water and close to a number of beaches as well as the Featherbed Nature Reserve. There is also the delightful Bell Tavern, an atmospheric and historic little inn.
The cottages here offer some of the best self-catering facilities for families along the Garden Route. Make sure to have lunch in the Bell Tavern – which must be both South Africa’s smallest and quaintest bar.
Caroline’s Bistro for contemporary dining or The Bell Tavern for lighter meals and snacks
Lagoon or Garden View Cottages are divided into Luxury and Classic Cottages. Ranging from one to three bedrooms, they are located along either side of the spacious gardens that are such a feature of the property. All cottages are well equipped with all the amenities that you could need and have small kitchens in case guests would like to self cater during their stay.
Although there is no specific children’s programme here, the fact that there are Two and Three Bedroom cottages make this an ideal place for families. The large open gardens are an ideal place for children to play and it is nice and close to the child friendly excursions of The Garden Route.
